MANATEE COUNTY - The unemployment rate in Manatee County is averaging a little more than 8.5% right now. But there may be a bright spot on the horizon for some. A new hotel just opened and they're looking to hire.
The Wingate Inn and Suites opened about 2 weeks ago near State Road 70 and I-75, and Sharon Byrwa says that business is already picking up. "We've seen a definite increase. We started very slowly and we're doing very, very well. We are the corporate hotel for the spring training staff of the Pittsburgh Pirates."
Managers say right now they're still looking to fill about 10 positions, including jobs at the front desk, along with positions in maintenance and housekeeping.
Byrwa says the hotel is working to partner with several other businesses in the community to make the hotel a destination for people from all over. "We are also looking for vendors. We need a pool service, landscapers...I'm looking for caterers to work with me in my meeting space."
As the hotel gains traction, Byrwa says there will be more than twenty-five full and part time positions in addition to the outside services needed.
